Core summary

GeoNames lists nine ZIP codes whose primary place name is Chesapeake, Virginia, a continuous block from 23320 to 23328. Six carry street delivery (23320 to 23325), two are PO Box codes (23327 and 23328) and one, 23326, is a unique ZIP that zip-codes.com labels Coast Guard Finance Center. None of them belongs to a county, because Chesapeake is one of Virginia's independent cities; the county column in ZIP data reads Chesapeake (city).

The nine Chesapeake place-name ZIPs

There is no single Chesapeake ZIP. DialWick's table comes from GeoNames' US postal-code export (CC BY 4.0, retrieved 2026-08-03), which stores one row per ZIP and place name. For the place string Chesapeake in Virginia it returns nine rows, 23320 through 23328, with no gaps in the sequence.

The delivery type column is taken from zip-codes.com's Chesapeake city page, which counts the same nine codes as "6 Standard, 2 PO Boxes, 1 Unique" and shows a data-last-updated date of October 1, 2026 (zip-codes.com: Chesapeake, VA, read 2026-10-20). Its population column shows how many residents each code covers, which is a better guide to where people live than the size of a code on a map.

Why the county column says Chesapeake (city)

Most US ZIP tables have a county column, and for Chesapeake it repeats the city's name. That is not a data error. The Census Bureau's geography glossary explains that in four states, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada and Virginia, some incorporated places are "independent of any county organization" and are treated as county equivalents for data presentation (U.S. Census Bureau Geography Program Glossary). Chesapeake is one of them, so a form that asks for a county should get "Chesapeake city", not Norfolk County.

Norfolk County is the name some older records still carry, and it is the reason the question comes up. The city's own history page says Chesapeake was created when Norfolk County and the City of South Norfolk merged. Voters approved the merger in a special election on February 13, 1962, chose the name Chesapeake that June, and the new city council first met on January 2, 1963 (City of Chesapeake: History of Chesapeake). That merger is also why 23324 still shows the alias South Norfolk.

The merger followed a hard decade. According to the same history page, during the 1950s both Norfolk County and South Norfolk faced annexation suits from neighboring cities, and between 1950 and 1960 the county lost nearly 50,000 residents and 30 square miles of land. The page also notes that older areas are still commonly called by community names such as Great Bridge, Deep Creek, Western Branch, Indian River and Hickory. In the GeoNames table, though, the primary place name for all nine codes is Chesapeake, and the only alias zip-codes.com shows for a standard code is South Norfolk on 23324. When a form rejects Great Bridge as a city, enter Chesapeake.

Street, PO Box and unique ZIPs

For a street address, use one of the six standard codes. By listed population, 23322 and 23320 are the largest, with about 67,000 and 60,000 residents, followed by 23323, 23321, 23324 and 23325. Those population numbers come from the zip-codes.com table above; they do not tell you which neighborhood sits in which code, so look the address up rather than guessing from a map.

23327 and 23328 are PO Box codes with no residential population. Use them only when the person you are writing to rents a box and gives you that ZIP. 23326 is listed as a unique ZIP with a population of zero and the alias Coast Guard Finance Center. It is not a residential code, so it does not belong on a home address.

Area codes and nearby cities

Chesapeake phone numbers use area code 757, which the North American numbering plan has overlaid with 948 since May 9, 2022, according to the area-code data DialWick uses. A ZIP change does not change a phone number, and the two systems draw their boundaries separately. For more on how overlays work, see how area codes work.
